I'm a sucker for both westerns and passing transmasculine characters, so this book was right up my alley. Overall very well written. Solid backdrop detailing, with clearly a good amount of research behind it. The two characters were sweet and naive when it came to relationships, operating on the emotional level of teenagers in first love. My only real quibble is that the author seemed to get a bit lost in the midsection of the book. The plot tread water for several chapters before finding a path towards a conclusion. I'd give it a 4.5 stars if possible. Not much for historic novels but there's just something about the rugged west that draws me. This story was a good one. I really liked how the secret of Cody being a woman was discovered by Lillie early on. It their journey much more enjoyable. I will say that overall the story was lighthearted compared to others ive read like this l, which is why the scene with Beth and Joseph felt out of place. It didn't really add to the story because that wasn't the tone it was set. I will also say that I wished it was longer. The ending climax when Cody and Lillie have their little crisis seemed to be ending of the book...dont worry all is well but what about Ellen? I would have loved an epilogue maybe a year later or something.Regardless, i enjoyed it. And fans of this genre, meaning Westernish, will enjoy it too...i think...i hope...
